Founder of TOMS Shoes on campus Tuesday, Sept. 14

Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS Shoes, will lecture at Murray State University on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 8 p.m. in Lovett Auditorium. TOMS Shoes sponsors the One for One program. The company is based on the premise that for each pair of shoes bought, a pair will be donated to a child in need in a developing country. For these children, shoes are not about fashion, but about protecting their feet from injury and disease.

The TOMS website describes its mission, saying, “Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good is what we’re all about. The TOMS mission transforms our customers into benefactors, which allows us to grow a truly sustainable business rather than depending on fundraising for support.”

According to the website, TOMS is now on track to give the One Millionth Pair of new shoes to a child in need this month. Find more information on the TOMS movement online at www.toms.com.

The event is free and everyone is invited.

Constitution Day

On September 17 and 20, “We the People” will be celebrating one of the most pivotal days in our nation’s history—the signing of the U.S. Constitution by our founding fathers. Murray State University’s Center for Service Learning & Civic Engagement, through sponsorship by the Office of Regional Stewardship and Outreach, will host this two-day event FREE to all community members.

Distracted driving simulator on campus Sept. 21

The Kentucky Department of Transportation's distracted driving simulator will be at the Curris Center Rocking Chair Lounge Tuesday, September 21, from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The simulator is free for all MSU students, faculty and staff. Sponsored by: Murray State University American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Student Section.

The keynote speaker will be Mike Hammons, executive director of the Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative.

MSU Stock Market Game™ workshop for area teachers Sept. 16 and Sept. 21

The Murray State University Center for Economic Education and the Kentucky Council on Economic Education will offer two free workshops for the Stock Market Game™ for grade 4-12 teachers. The first workshop will be held on Murray State’s campus on Thursday, Sept. 16; the second will be at Farley Elementary School in Paducah, Ky., on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Both workshops run from 4 to 7 p.m. Participant teachers attend the workshop of their choice.

American Medical Student Association sponsors Lessons Learned on the Pre-Med Path

The MSU chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is sponsoring an information session for anyone interested in pursuing medical school. A panel of undergraduate students (across majors), who just applied to medical school, will share their diverse experiences on the pre-med path and provide important information for students interested in medical school. Most people would agree that the middle school year can be very difficult. That is why ten years ago the Murray State Women's Center began the G.R.O.W. program. This mentoring program pairs a selected group of college women with a selected group of middle school girls and endevers to devolp better seld-confidence and leadership skills. We are hoping that you will help us find a great group of college women for this years mentoring program. Interested or wanting to learn more? “Geeks Night Out” set for Sept. 14 in Hopkinsville

The Murray State Regional Business and Innovation Center will host “Geeks Night Out” for the Professional Organization of Information and Network Technology (P.O.I.N.T.) Sept. 14. The meeting will take place at the Pennyrile Area Development District Office Boardroom in Hopkinsville from 5:30-7 p.m.

P.O.I.N.T. was created in 2009 by the RBIC to allow professionals in technology-based fields and anyone interested in technology to interact, share new information and learn from each other.

Michael Bowman, Associate Professor of Telecommunications System Management at Murray State University, will speak at the event. His lecture is entitled “What’s Next? Mining Technology Trends from the Internet’s Unstructured Data.” The speech will address predictions for the “next big thing” in information technology, along with a project to uncover them.

Cycling class for MSU employees

Beginning, Tuesday August 31st at 4:00, a cycling class will be offered at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center that is geared toward MSU employees. The weekly (Tuesday) 45 minute class is sponsored by MSU’s employee wellness program, Healthy LIFE. Anyone, regardless of fitness level or experience is welcome to join the class. To ensure you will have a bike, please call the wellness center (809-6000) starting at 8:00 am on the morning of the class each week. Murray State’s Program of Distinction hosts fifth annual golf day

Murray State’s Program of Distinction in Telecommunications Systems Management (TSM) will host the annual, AT&T Women in Telecom Golf Day, Sept. 16. Held at Murray State’s beautiful Miller Memorial Golf Course, this event, which is one of a kind in the region, was developed specifically for women in the telecom industry. The golfing activities are designed for women who do and do not know how to golf to come together for a day of networking and fun. AT&T has sponsored the event the past few years and continues its support this September. The Center for TSM at Murray State is asking for a $50 donation from each participant to help fund the AT&T Women in Telecom Scholarship that will be awarded to chosen females entering the Murray State TSM program for the 2010-2011 school year.
