Elaine Spalding, president of the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce, was recognized for 25 years of chamber work by the American Chamber of Commerce’s Executive’s Association. Spalding, a 1980 Murray State University graduate in journalism, was presented with a certificate and a lapel pin at the ACCE conference in Milwaukee Aug. 6. She has been president of the Paducah chamber for 10 years. She also has worked for the chambers in Beaverton, Oregon; Louisville and San Antonio. Spalding has served on the ACCE Board and as chair of the National Association for Membership Development (NAMD). ACCE is the only national organization dedicated to and driven by the issues and interests of chamber professionals.

The new, high-performance server has arrived, the MSU website has been migrated to the server, and extensive testing is being conducted. MSU Information Systems personnel will soon be joined by technicians trained specifically for configuring the new hardware for our content management system. Once testing and fine-tuning are complete, the MSU website will relaunch, and the homepage will return to its former, dynamic state. The timeline for the relaunch will depend upon on the arrival of the technicians and the extent of their work. Watch for announcements in your email and elsewhere for specific dates.

Visit the Racer Writing Center on the web
Last spring Murray State University’s faculty, staff and students voted to adopt the improvement of writing skills as the central focus of the university’s accreditation plan, a move that indicated the importance of effective writing skills for current and future graduates. In order to fulfill that focus, 1964 MSU alumni, Jesse D. Jones in partnership with the department of English and philosophy and the university libraries at MSU, has established the “Racer Writing Center.”

Murray State University’s Hopkinsville campus has been successfully implementing a project called “Summer Solutions: Speech Therapy for Young Children with Down Syndrome,” which assists intellectually disabled youth with their speech. Through funding supported by MSU’s Office of Regional Stewardship, personnel were enabled to travel to Hopkinsville and provide speech therapy to eight children with Down syndrome.

Murray State University’s Cinema International program continues on Aug. 26-28, with A Prophet, a 2010 film from France. The film is in French, Arabic and Corsican with English subtitles, and is rated R.
Malik is a French boy of Arabic ancestry who ends up in prison where he comes of age and is taught by hardened criminals. Cesar, the leader of the Corsican gang rules the prison and begins to view Malik’s Arab ancestry as useful. He makes Malik an offer, kill or be killed. He is a fast learner and climbs the prison ranks while cultivating supernatural abilities. A Prophet was awarded multiple Caesars and the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes in 2009.
The film stars Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup and Adel Bencherif.
Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to all Cinema International films. There is no charge for admission. Films begin at 7:30 p.m. nightly in the Curris Center Theater.

Murray State University faculty and staff believe in the purpose and mission of MSU so strongly that many were willing to donate their own money to support the 2010 President’s Cup Challenge. The purpose of the Challenge is to create a friendly competition among the various administrative and academic offices to help raise money for Hold Thy Banner High: The Campaign for the Students of Murray State University. Four-hundred and four faculty and staff raised $198,012, a 25% increase in dollars raised from 2009.

The Kentucky 2010 Capital Planning Advisory Board will meet on Murray State University’s campus on Friday, Aug. 27, at 10:30 a.m. in Pogue Library located at the corner of Olive Boulevard and 15th streets. The board is composed of 12 citizen members and four legislators. State Senators Jack Westwood and Melvin B. Henley co-chair the committee. Other legislative members are Sen. David E. Boswell and Rep. Ron Crimm. Dr. Randy J. Dunn, MSU president, along with Tom Denton, vice president for finance and administrative services, and Kim Oatman, chief facilities officer, will discuss MSU capital projects. Officials from Western Kentucky University will also be on hand for discussion of their projects. Media are invited to attend.

HEA 189 is course available to MSU employees and their spouses that serves to promote a healthy lifestyle. The class is designed to help individuals learn more about their own health & wellness. Benefits of the class include expansion of knowledge of a variety of health-related issues, awareness of on-campus and local resources, and the class allows those enrolled to access the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. HEA 189 is a pass/fail course and can be taken on a recurrent basis. For those taking the course for the first time, you must submit the HEA 189 Application (to Admissions), which is a streamlined application to the university (unless already enrolled). The application fee is waived for employees; however, the application fee ($30) applies to spouses. Once this process is complete and for those re-enrolling in HEA 189, please complete the Request for Waiver of Tuition and send to Human Resources. Please allow time for processing then contact Registration via phone (809-3776) or e-mail (Rhonda.timmons@murraystate.edu) to request that a permission override for HEA 189 be completed (please provide your M#). The employee/spouse must then schedule for the course using your MyGate account. Once enrolled, please allow 2-5 business days for your card to be activated prior to use for entering the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The Murray State Regional Business and Innovation Center will host “Geeks Night Out” for the Professional Organization of Information and Network Technology (P.O.I.N.T.) Sept. 14. The meeting will take place at the Pennyrile Area Development District Office Boardroom in Hopkinsville from 5:30-7 p.m.
P.O.I.N.T. was created in 2009 by the RBIC to allow professionals in technology-based fields and anyone interested in technology to interact, share new information and learn from each other.
Michael Bowman, Associate Professor of Telecommunications System Management at Murray State University, will speak at the event. His lecture is entitled “What’s Next? Mining Technology Trends from the Internet’s Unstructured Data.” The speech will address predictions for the “next big thing” in information technology, along with a project to uncover them.
