Campus Lights is this weekend

The 72nd annual production of Campus Lights is this week, Jan. 22, 23, and 24 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. This year's production is "Grease," the beloved fifties Broadway musical that features well-known songs such as "We Go Together," "Beauty School Drop-Out," and "Hand Jive." The show is directed by Paul Corder, with musical direction by Brant Veal. Good girl Sandy (Samantha Walters) and greaser Danny (Caleb Campbell) fall in love over the summer, but come fall, when they unexpectedly discover they're in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance? Campus Lights is the longest-running student-produced show in the South and is presented by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Sigma Alpha Iota. Alex Bruner, president of Phi Mu Alpha, is the production chair. Proceeds from the show fund a renewable music scholarship for an incoming freshman music major. MSU celebrates Black History Month all semester

Black history is not just for February anymore. Thanks to a full calendar of events, Murray State University is celebrating black history all semester long. From Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and the inauguration of President Barack Obama in January, to the cumulative Spring Hitimu Celebration in May, the university community is rallying to observe the impact of African Americans on society and commemorate their landmark achievements.

Murray State supports Needline’s Backpack program, prepares for spring food drive

Murray State University faculty, staff and students, in conjunction with Needline, have amassed enough food and donations to give nearly 1,000 in-need children a weekend meal, and plans are underway to continue. The university community collected 862 bags of food and 820 pounds of backpack-appropriate food items for the Backpack Program so far this school year. Nearly $1,200 has been raised for additional Backpack food items. “There are many children in need of food and (the community’s) support is vital to the success of meeting that need,” Robin Taffler, Murray State coordinator of service learning, said.

Center for Reservoir Research announces research grants for graduate students

The Center for Reservoir Research is accepting applications for three new programs to support aquatic-oriented research at Murray State University. The
Watershed Summer Research Award fellowship provides summer stipend (up to $3,000 depending upon availability of funds) for non-Water Science graduate students. The Watershed Research Tuition Grant provides up to two semesters of tuition support depending on student qualifications and availability of funds and is open to all graduate students. Faculty mentors may also encourage incoming graduate students (i.e., for Fall 2009) to apply for this grant. The Watershed Research Grant provides up to $1000 for supplies needed to support graduate research. Students must provide a detailed budget with their application along with descriptions of other funding sources that have been contacted or will be contacted.

Residential Colleges looking for two new College Heads

A unique opportunity exists in the Residential College System for a faculty member to make a tremendous impact on the lives of our students. Chairman and CEO of faith-based consulting firm will speak with MSU students

Chris Palmer, head of the music business program at Murray State University, is exposing his students to leaders in the field of music business for first-hand learning. Guest speakers will share their experiences, answer questions and offer guiding tips to MSU students as they prepare for careers after graduation. "As part of our MUS 331: Music Industry Marketing night course, we are inviting a number of guest speakers throughout the semester to speak with the class. We’re also inviting any MSU students or interested faculty to join us for the first hour with these guests,” Palmer said.

Welcome Back Study Abroad students

Last fall semester, 27 Murray State students studied abroad on programs in Belize, China, Germany, Japan, Kenya and Mexico. Over the winter break another 32 students studied abroad in England and on a multi-country program across Europe. Congratulations, journeymen! You have accomplished what only 2% of college students across the U.S. attempt to do.

Assertiveness training

Could better communication skills help you socially, academically, and/or in your career? Do you want to improve your confidence but don't know where to start? Do you feel like you're too passive or too aggressive? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then Assertiveness Training could benefit you. Beginning Thursday, February 5 you have the opportunity to become the effective and comfortable communicator that you always wanted to be. The 9-week training is open to all Murray State faculty, staff and students. The group will meet on Thursdays from 12:30-1:45 p.m. in Ordway Hall, Room 305. Fannin named College/University Teacher of the Year

Murray State University associate professor John Fannin was recently named College/University Teacher of the Year for the state of Kentucky for the 2008-09 school year by the Kentucky Music Education Association. Appointed assistant director of bands at Murray State in 1995, Fannin’s responsibilities at Murray include Symphonic Band, Marching Band and instrumental music education classes. Under his leadership the Racer Marching Band has grown from 85 to 245 members, and has been featured at the 2006 Bands of America Grand National Marching Band Championships.

Family and Medical Leave policy changed

Murray State's Family and Medical Leave policy was changed to reflect recent legislation passed in Congress. Coverage is now extended to the family of military servicemembers. The process for requesting leave has changed slightly too. All other significant provisions of the policy remain unchanged, including the university's 26-week FMLA leave limit. Employees making a request must complete a form and other certifications that are available in the myGate Forms Central area. All of these changes are pending final approval at next month's Board of Regents meeting.

Public Safety and Emergency Management now in new location

The Public Safety and Emergency Management operations formerly housed in the building located at 16th and Olive have now moved to a new facility. Police and Parking Services personnel are available to assist you at their new location at 16th and Chestnut Streets (Five Points). The new facility will provide an advantageous location for the department and its constituents. Business and visitor parking is located in front of the building directly off of Chestnut Street. You may contact Public Safety at 809-2222 or 911 (for emergencies) and Parking at 809-4812.
