Faculty and staff get 35% discount at Winslow

On the first day of classes Monday, January 12, 2009, Gina Winchester, Staff Regent, and Phil Schooley, Staff Congress President, took advantage of a new employee discount on campus compliments of Mr. Richard Fritz and MSU Food Service. Starting this semester, all faculty and staff employees can benefit from using their staff ID to get a 35% discount on meal purchases at Winslow Cafeteria. The discount automatically applied will result in a charge of $4.00 for breakfast, $5.00 for lunch (including the Sunday Buffet) and $6.00 for dinner plus 6% sales tax. These prices will be good for dinner meals if staff wanted to bring in their family as long as they present their current MSU ID card. All meals are served on an “all you care to eat” basis which includes salads, soups, entrees, vegetables, starches, beverages, desserts and special events. However, no carryout will be permitted with this price point discount. Normal service hours (M-F) Breakfast are 7:00 to 11:00 a.m., Lunch 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Dinner 4:00 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday hours of operation are: Brunch 11:00 am – 2:00 pm, Dinner 4:00 – 7:30 pm.

2009 Young Artist Concerto Competition

The Paducah Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and the Murray State University (MSU) department of music will co-sponsor the Young Artist Concerto Competition on Saturday, Jan. 10, in the Performing Arts Hall and Farrell Recital Hall, Price Doyle Fine Arts Center, on the MSU campus. Performances will begin at 1 p.m. and are free and open to the public. The Piano Division will include eight high school piano students from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee performing single movements of piano concertos by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Brahms, Ravel and Shostakovich. The first place winner will be announced following the performances and will receive a $1,000 cash prize sponsored by BB&T, performance with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra on March 21, music scholarship to Murray State University (if eligible) and a first place award plaque. The second place winner will receive a $300 cash prize from WKMS-FM 91.3. Dr. Richard Scott, MSU department of music, is the competition director.

Ozkirim and Cetin present hypothesis to American Geophysical Union

Fugen Ozkirim, Murray State University alumnus, and Haluk Cetin presented a new hypothesis related to Plate Tectonics at the 2008 Fall American Geophysical Union meeting in December. The presentation became headline news at the MSNBC science news website and at Discovery Channel news. Many other websites also ran the story. After the presentation in December 2008, Ozkirim and Cetin submitted the research for publication at the Geophysical Research Letters Journal.

Horticulture Department plant sale

The Murray State Horticulture Department is having a Clear-Out the Greenhouse Plant Sale on Saturday, January 17th from 9:00-12:00 at the Pullen Farm Greenhouse Complex. Renee welcomes a panel of guests to discuss the Kentucky Girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Collaborative Project on the next Connections. The program airs Friday, Jan. 23 at 4/3 p.m. CT on KET2 and Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1:30/12:30 p.m. CT on KET1. The panel includes Carol Hanley, director of education and communications at the University of Kentucky; Doris Clark-Sarr, director of Adventures in Math and Science (AIMS) at Murray State University; Nancy Martin, professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Louisville; and Sue Scheff, coordinator of the Appalachian and Minority Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Majors (AMSTEMM) program at the University of Kentucky.
