NCATE/EPSB completes first stage of continued accreditation for College of Education

Wednesday, January 7. 2009
Murray State University’s College of Education (COE) has successfully completed the first stage of the continued accreditation of its education programs with no areas of improvement cited. The news came during a recent week-long meeting of NCATE/EPSB team members, COE faculty, MSU administrators, arts and sciences faculty liaisons, staff and PK-12 school partners on Murray State’s campus. The meeting was held to communicate the quality of programs and degree of collaboration with partners. The next stage in the accreditation process will involve a review of the written report the team developed during the visit. As this was a joint state and national review, audit committees from both the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Educational Professional Standards Board will make separate and independent decisions about continuing accreditation based on the evidence presented by the team’s report. According to Dr. Russ Wall, dean of the MSU college of education, the review will take approximately a year to complete.

Cripps and Kipphut Research Published by National Journal

Wednesday, January 7. 2009
Rebecca M. Cripps, Murray State University (MSU) alumnus, and faculty mentor Dr. George Kipphut, Professor of Geosciences, co-authored a study entitled “Survey of Nitrogen Isotopes of Lepomis macrochirus (Blue Gill) from Kentucky Lake Reservoir and Ledbetter Creek, Kentucky.” It was recently published in the American Journal of Undergraduate Research. Their work followed existing research that showed variations in isotope ratios of nitrogen in fish depending on their food sources. In this study, Cripps measured the populations of Blue Gill in Kentucky Lake Reservoir and a small tributary, Ledbetter Creek, both in western Kentucky. While the Blue Gill in Cripps’ study could migrate between the two environments, the research found that the isotope results suggest the fish in the Ledbetter Creek were spending enough time feeding in that environment to alter their isotopic signature. The results of the project should assist in understanding how Blue Gill utilize both stream and reservoir environments.
